MUSIC CALENDAR

New Orleans may not be a recording mecca such as New York, Los Angeles or Nashville, but the Crescent City does have more live music than almost all of these cities combined.

Specialty music in the City includes: New Orleans Jazz (of course), that encompass Trad Jazz, Dixieland Jazz, Brass Bands and even Modern Jazz.

Aside from "The Music That Made New Orleans FamousSM" there are so many styles being performed by talented artists, everywhere.

Uptown, the Garden District Band performs seven nights a week at Houston's Restaurant at 1755 St. Charles Avenue beginning at 6:45pm. You can sit at the bar or in the dining room and enjoy sophisticated, swinging jazz and Latin classic standards with a groove and intensity.

From there you can take the street car and go to Canal Street, then walk down Bourbon Street (passing great music) to Preservation Hall at 726 St. Peter Street for an 8pm show in the French Quarter

Then walk 1/2 block back to Bourbon Street, turn right and go to to 733 Bourbon to Fritzel's European Jazz Pub (on the left) where many musicians "sit in" to form a full band by 10 or 11pm

By 11:30pm you can leave and take a taxi or Pedi-Cab to Frenchman Street in the Faubourg Marigny area where there are multiple venues throughout a three block stretch with an eclectic mix of Hot Jazz, Trad Jazz, Funk to improvised and original musical styles on the cutting edge. ... you might hear the next big act before they are known!

A few venues along Frenchman Street that are must see include Snug Harbor, the Spotted Cat, (Club) DBA, the Blue Nile and many others.

On another night you might want to venture to the Palm Court Jazz Cafe for an early trad jazz show. During the day or evening catch one of the best trad jazz bands in the city on the Steamboat Natchez.

If you venture back to the Garden District or Uptown, stop into Houston's Restaurant again, then head up to Dos Jefes Cigar Bar at 5535 Tchoupitoulas Street for a night cap and some of the best music in the city.

There are so many great venues with truly amazing talent performing in the City of New Orleans and we don't have room to list them all!

Another great source to find out who is performing where on a daily schedule is the "WWOZ Livewire Music Calendar"

This sums it up: Chris Noth, actor, told me while listening to the Garden District Trio at Houston's Restaurant ... "There's more music and culture in every block (in New Orleans) than anywhere else combined."
